Contest Expectations

Exhibit, website, and paper judging is closed to the public. 

We will only announce final rounds for Documentary and Performance catagories. All other categories (website, paper and exhibit) final rounds will be judged without students present.

National History Day in Wisconsin

Eau Claire Regional

UW Eau Claire has hosted the regional contest since 2003. Originally, NHD was connected to the establishment of a public history certificate program at UWEC and the first of several Teaching American History grants. The Teaching American History grants supported graduate level instruction for social studies teachers in many WI communities and establishing NHD programs in school districts and classrooms throughout Northwestern Wisconsin as part of the curriculum. We are proud that this contest continues to be one of the largest in Wisconsin. 

What to Expect During the Contest?

Are you ready to compete? Don't be nervous! It is meant to be a fun opportunity for you to share your hard work with others. Judges are excited to view your work and want to hear from you!

Judge Criteria

 

  • 60% — Historical Quality
    • Accuracy
    • Interpret and analyze
    • Place in historical context
    • Shows wide research
    • Strong thesis
    • Balanced—multiple viewpoints
    • Available primary sources used
  • 20% — Relation to Theme
    • Use triumph AND tragedy
    • Demonstrate why topic is significant in history
  • 20% — Clarity of Presentation
    • Use of visual images
    • Process paper and bibliography clearly organized
  • 0% — Quality of Interview
    • Interview is meant for students to share more about their process/research
    • Projects stand alone; extra content can give a competitive advantage. They can share, but you can’t judge what they say over what they completed.
